…
Well howdy, howdy and welcome to the Unstoppable Introvert Podcast!
Today, I’m talking about a topic that often gets overlooked and forgotten about when it comes to messaging.
We’re all bombarded with endless advice on how to frame our messages, create captivating content, and engage our audience. But the conversation often stops there, leaving out an integral piece of the puzzle.
And that piece is your messaging mindset.
Which is 100% a real thing – and in this episode I’ll explain why….
So first of all – what the heck is messaging mindset?
It’s all about the beliefs, attitudes, and internal narratives you hold about your ability to articulate your ideas and expertise and communicate effectively.
So, it would be totally remiss of me not to talk about this.
You can create the best messaging in the world, but if you struggle with your mindset around communicating your messages, it means those messages might not get seen or heard in the most impactful way.
It means that all that work you’ve done to create your highly compelling messaging for your business, won’t get witnessed in the way it should…
That is ➡️ You communicating it with unwavering confidence and self-belief.
I’ve been working in the communication and messaging space for over 20 years with hundreds of clients, and some of the most common messaging mindset blocks I’ve heard include:
👉 Why would anyone listen to me?
👉 It’s been said before, so why add to the noise?
👉 My competitors are better at sharing their messages than me.
👉 I’m an introvert so I’m no good at public speaking or being on video.
👉 I’m worried I’ll offend someone if I share what I really think.
👉 I’ll be judged or compared to others in my industry.
👉 My messaging is different to the ‘norm’ in my profession, what if my perspectives are wrong?
If any of these resonate with you, know that you’re not alone.
When such thoughts cloud your mind, they block your path forward, preventing you from confidently sharing your knowledge and expertise with those who genuinely need it.
And that helps no one.
So when you work on refining your messaging, it’s important to first identify any beliefs like those I shared and then look at some strategies to tackle them so they don’t stop you communicating your messages in the most impactful way.
1️⃣ Focus on value, not perfection
Shift your mindset from striving for perfection when it comes to communicating your messages to delivering value.
It’s normal to make mistakes, and actually mistakes can be rather endearing!
Have you heard of the Pratfall Effect? It says that as humans, we like people who make mistakes or blunders, MORE than those who are seemingly perfect 🙌 So keep that in mind!
Here’s the thing… What matters most is the value you provide to your audience. Concentrate on how your message can benefit and resonate with your ideal clients rather than aiming for flawless delivery.
2️⃣ Reframe fear as opportunity
If self-doubt or fear creeps in when you think about communicating your messages, remember it’s only natural to feel nervous.
Reframe these feelings as a signal that this “thing” you’re about to do (speaking, being on video, being on a podcast for example) is a skill you can work on.
I don’t believe anyone is born a natural communicator – even the people who seem like they were ‘born with it’ practice and improve.
That means you can too! You can develop and build your confidence and skills in those areas of communication that feel difficult for you right now.
3️⃣ Visualize the amazing response that’s possible!
Visualize yourself confidently sharing your messages.
Imagine all the positive outcomes that can come your way as a result of showing up and sharing your messages, instead of all the things that could go wrong.
Think about the possibility of:
💖 Amazing clients reaching out to you.
💖 Meaningful conversations and new relationships built.
💖 Exciting opportunities dropping into your inbox.
💖 Your messaging helping you to be booked out in exactly the way you want.
By visualizing these positive outcomes, it can help you to reduce anxiety and bolster your self-assurance when putting yourself out there and communicating with others.
4. Your Unique Voice Matters
If you’re concerned that “it’s all been said before”? Remember, that people – your ideal clients – might not have heard YOU say it before.
Your voice, experiences, and perspectives bring a fresh take and the WAY YOU communicate it means that your way of saying it might resonate and connect more deeply with some people than that same message delivered by others. So always remind yourself about this when you share messaging that you might feel has already been “done.”
Because someone out there needs to hear your version of that message delivered by you.
5. Remember Your ‘why’:
Whenever doubt creeps in, circle back to your purpose. Why did you start? Why are you doing what you’re doing? What are you fighting for or against? That can help to act as your compass. It can help you to remember that your message is more important than your fear. That what you have to share really does matter.
6. Start small and build confidence
If you’re anxious about sharing your message, start small. Begin by sharing your thoughts with a trusted business friend, mentor, or in a supportive community.
Gradually increase the scope of your messaging as you gain confidence. Remember, confidence in messaging is a skill that can be developed over time through practice. As you begin to see a response (or not) you can refine your messaging so it resonates. A large part of messaging is getting your message out there to be seen and heard. Only then can you begin to refine it and as you do, your confidence about sharing your message will grow too.
7. Embrace your true message
Understand that when you speak from a place of genuine belief and passion, not everyone will agree with you—and that’s perfectly okay.
It’s important to remember that by being true to yourself, you will resonate deeply with a specific audience, those who truly align with your values and message. These individuals are likely to feel a stronger connection to you and become your most loyal supporters.
While it’s crucial to remain open and considerate of diverse viewpoints, you shouldn’t feel pressured to dilute your authentic voice. Being considerate doesn’t mean compromising on your core beliefs.
In business, as in life, it’s impossible to please everyone. Focus on the impact and positive change you can make for those who resonate with your message, while always ensuring you operate with integrity and respect.
As I bring today’s episode to a close, I would love you to think about which, if any, of these common messaging mindset blocks affect you the most?
As introverts, when we spend time worrying about these kind of challenges and not taking action on them, it can chew into our energy. So tackling them using some of the strategies I’ve shared today, I hope, will help you to not only feel more confident sharing your messages with the world – but also help to conserve your energy for the act of sharing of it.
As always – let me know what you think about this episode….
